Speaking recently on The Transfer Window podcast, Duncan Castles discussed Liverpool’s approach to signing targets in the January transfer window.

During a season which has been ravaged by injury, with Jurgen Klopp having the likes of Alisson, Konstantinos Tsimikas, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Thiago, James Milner, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah all ruled out for at least one game so far this term, as well as Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all looking likely to be out for a considerable chunk of the club’s the 2020/21 campaign, the 53-year-old’s side have performed extremely admirably, currently occupying second place in the Premier League, while also topping their Champions League group.

However, despite having to deal with what could easily be described as an injury crisis, Castles stated recently on The Transfer Window podcast that it is unclear as to whether the Liverpool board will be backing Klopp in the January market, as the club’s owners would prefer the German not to spend any money in the winter window.

He said: “My information is that Liverpool are working on these alternative deals, it’s not the case that they’re sitting back and saying, ‘We wait to see what happens with our players before we start working on the transfers.’ It’s more, ‘We wait and see whether we have to push the button on these transfers, can we get away with it?’ because FSG would like to get away without having to spend.

“[There is] no question that the optimal solution is to recruit, but Liverpool’s books are not in a position where they can go and do what you’d expect Abu Dhabi and Manchester City to do in a situation like this, which is, ‘We need a player to give us the best chance possible of retaining the title or winning a major trophy, let’s go and spend the money required now because money is not an issue to us’. FSG don’t work that way.”

TIF Thoughts on Duncan Castles’ comments regarding Liverpool’s January transfer window…

From Castles’ comments, it would appear that, despite all of Liverpool’s injuries, as well as what we assume to be FSG’s desire to retain the club’s Premier League crown, it still remains uncertain as to whether or not Klopp will be permitted to spend big in order to add depth to his squad this January, as the club’s owners would prefer not to spend any more money than they have to.

And, while Liverpool have coped magnificently with their obstacles thus far, the longer their season goes on, the more difficult it will be for their healthy players to maintain their own fitness levels, especially if Klopp’s side go deep in domestic and European cups.

As such, in our opinion, it would be very wise of the Liverpool board to provide Klopp with at least some of the reinforcements he requires in order to keep the squad fresh, as well as towards the top of the table.
