Speaking recently on the Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano revealed that reported Liverpool transfer target, Dayot Upamecano, will not be leaving RB Leipzig in the January transfer window.

Following potentially season-ending injuries to centre-back pair Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, much has been discussed as to whether Jurgen Klopp will enter the January transfer window with the intention of signing cover in the position.

First up in this Mo Salah quiz, what is his current squad number for Liverpool?

One potential target has been reported to be the £54 million-rated Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, who has featured 129 times for the Bundesliga side, chipping in with four goals and providing two assists along the way.

However, speaking on a recent episode of the Here We Go podcast, Romano stated his belief that the 22-year-old will not be leaving Germany in January, but he could well be a target for clubs next summer.

He said: “What I want to say about Upamecano is no rush, no rush. We are in December and the player, in my opinion, from what I heard, is going to move next summer, not [in] January.

“Also, next summer he will have an interesting release clause. It will be a bargain, in my opinion, just because he’s an interesting centre-back and signing him for a bit more than €40 million is something great. But, he’s not moving right now, so no rush.

“So, the situation is really quiet, and that’s why I would say no rush, he will decide [in] the next months. His agent is talking with many clubs.”

TIF Thoughts on Fabrizio Romano’s comments regarding Dayot Upamecano…

So, from Romano’s comments, it would appear that the journalist is of the belief that Upamecano will not be the player Klopp brings into the club in January, should he indeed purchase a centre-back in the winter window.

However, Romano does state that the Frenchman will be available to purchase for a figure of around about €40 million (£36.1 million) in the summer.

So, if Liverpool can make do with the players they currently have in their squad to fill for the injured Van Dijk and Gomez until the end of the season, perhaps we could see the Reds biding their time for Upamecano, if he is indeed top of their transfer wish list.
