Speaking recently on the Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano discussed Liverpool’s link with a move for LOSC Lille central midfielder, Renato Sanches.

Since moving to Lille from Bayern Munich in what was an £18 million deal last summer, Sanches has gone on to feature 40 times for the Ligue 1 side, chipping in with five goals and providing one assist along the way.

First up in this Mo Salah quiz, what is his current squad number for Liverpool?

So far this season, the £18 million-rated 23-year-old has highly impressed over his eight league appearances for Christophe Galtier’s side, scoring one goal and averaging a WhoScored match rating of 6.98 – ranking him as the eighth-best player in a side who currently occupy second place in the Ligue 1 table.

And it would seem that the impressive performances of Sanches have caught the eye of Jurgen Klopp, as recent reports have suggested that the German could be interested in bringing the Portugal international to Merseyside in January.

However, speaking on a recent episode of the Here We Go podcast, Romano poured cold water over this potential deal, suggesting that, while Liverpool may well have the midfielder on their shortlist, he does not think a move will materialise in the upcoming window.

He said (28:14): “What I want to say is that between Liverpool and Lille there is no agreement, at the moment, no negotiations. But, Renato Sanches wants to change, he wants to change to go to the top level. [Jorge] Mendes wants to change the situation of Renato Sanches.

“But, at the moment, there is nothing agreed yet with Liverpool. So, to be honest, we have to say, ‘Let’s see’. Probably he’s on the list because they are waiting for the final decision by [Georginio] Wijnaldum, he has not decided yet. So, let’s see for next summer, but at the moment, for January, there is no agreement.”

TIF Thoughts on Fabrizio Romano’s comments regarding Liverpool’s link with Renato Sanches…

As such, despite the reports suggesting that an agreement has been reached between the French side and Liverpool for the transfer of Sanches this January, it would appear, if Romano is to be believed, this is something that is simply not true. So, a big update from Romano which may not be taken too well by some Liverpool fans, should they want the midfielder to join in the January transfer window.

However, as Romano also mentions, with Wijnaldum still not having agreed to extend his contract with the Reds, and, thus, being free to discuss terms with a new club from January 1st, it would seem as if Liverpool will be in need of a new central midfielder in the not so distant future, so we could potentially see a move for Sanches occur next summer.
