Arsenal journalist Charles Watts has been discussing Gunners winger Reiss Nelson and his absence from the squad during the north London club’s recent 4-1 defeat against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

This comes after Watts recently uploaded a video onto his YouTube channel reflecting on the defeat against Pep Guardiola’s side.

In what month did Mikel Arteta take over as the Arsenal boss?

On the topic of Nelson and his absence from the midweek clash, Watts had this to say on the matter. (13.50)

He said: “Reiss Nelson wasn’t injured [against City]. He’s been training and yet he’s not playing, I don’t understand that. He was playing so well in Europa League, he was scoring goals, he was creating goals and then suddenly he’s gone.

“We were told he had a little bit of head injury in training but I mean that’s cleared now, he’s training, we’re seeing him and [against City] were told that he just wasn’t in the squad for managerial reasons and he was just not picked.

“What’s going on with that? Surely you play Reiss Nelson at the moment? Again, it’s another example of decision making I’m finding a little bit confusing.”

As a product of Arsenal’s youth academy, the 21-year-old made his senior debut for the club back in 2017. Since then, the winger has made 46 appearances for the north London club in which he has managed to score four goals and provide four assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts on Charles Watts’ comments on Nelson…

The fact that Watts thinks Nelson should have played a part in the game against City just goes to show how much he rates the winger and thinks he could have made a difference against the Manchester club if he had played.

Do you think Nelson should have played against Manchester City?

Yes

No

No

Given how in Nelson’s last appearance for Arsenal he managed to earn himself a solid match rating of 7.64/10 for his performance against Rapid Vienna in the Europa League, it does seem strange that he was left out of the squad for the game against City if he wasn’t injured.
