Football journalist David Ornstein has shed some light on Arsenal’s reported transfer interest in RB Salzburg midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.

This comes after Ornstein recently co-hosted the latest episode of The Athletic’s Ornstein & Chapman Podcast where he spoke about a number of topics concerning English football at this moment in time.

In what month did Mikel Arteta take over as the Arsenal boss?

On the topic of Arsenal and some potential transfer business the north London could make in the near future, Ornstein had this to say on their interest in Szoboszlai.

He said: “A lot has been spoken about Dominik Szoboszlai of Salzburg, but Arsenal won’t be the only team in the mix for him. There is admiration there but there are some reservations too, he’s very young and raw and they need to be absolutely convinced.

“Although that release clause, from what I seem to recall – €25 million – seems incredibly low for a player of his talent and future potential.”

The 20-year-old, who is currently valued at £22.5 million, signed to Salzburg back in the 2018 January transfer window from FC Liefering for an undisclosed fee.

Since then, he has gone on to make 77 appearances for the Austrian club in which he has managed to score 25 goals and provide 33 assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts on David Ornstein’s comments on Szoboszlai…

It appears that while Arsenal remain interested in Szoboszlai, Ornstein thinks that other clubs will also be interested in signing the 20-year-old. Looking at his impressive goals and assists record for Salzburg, this doesn’t come as a surprise to us.

In our view, with Arsenal having only scored two goals in their previous six Premier League games, maybe adding someone like Szoboszlai, who has scored eight goals himself so far this season, would be something the north London club should look to do in January.
