Pundit Peter Martin has recently made a claim about Celtic’s recent performance against Hibernian.

Martin was hosting the latest episode of PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show and the panel discussed multiple issues involving Scottish football. One topic of discussion was Celtic’s recent performance against Hibs and Martin believes that Neil Lennon’s players have thrown him under the bus and Diego Laxalt’s goal saved Lennon from being sacked.

Celtic currently find themselves 11 points behind the Gers in the Premiership table. While they do have two games in hand, they were held to a 2-2 draw by Hibs. They had found themselves 2-0 down but they scored two goals later in the game to pick up one point from the tie (as per BBC Sport).

Did Laxalt's goal save Neil Lennon's job?

Martin believes that if not for Laxalt’s goal, Lennon might not have made it to Saturday night as the club’s manager.

He said: “Well, I’ll be blunt: I think the players have thrown the manager under the bus. I think Diego Laxalt’s goal to equalise saved the manager from the sack, in my view. That’s how close it was – I don’t think he’d have seen out Saturday night if Celtic had lost that game, because Rangers would’ve been in an unassailable position, in my view – even with two games in hand.”

TIF Thoughts on Martin’s comments…

It has been reported that the Celtic board is backing Lennon and the club’s manager will not walk away on a voluntary basis (as per Glasgow Live).

Lennon has previously criticised the attitude of some players and after the club’s defeat to Ferencvaros in the qualifying stages of the Champions League, he had urged the club’s players to get their mentality and attitude right (as per BBC Sport).

This clearly shows that there is something wrong with how the club’s players are behaving and that might be letting Celtic down. So Martin might be right to point out the fact that the players are throwing Lennon under the bus.
