Celtic pundit Danny Kelly has recently made a claim about Scott Bain and why he should be the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Kelly was a guest on the latest episode of the ‘A Celtic State of Mind’ podcast and the panel discussed multiple issues involving the Bhoys. One topic of discussion was the club’s goalkeepers. Kelly argues that Bain has been at Celtic through tough times and has won a treble with the club, while Vasilis Barkas is yet to prove himself at Parkhead.
Barkas joined Celtic from AEK Athens in the summer transfer window, but the Greek goalkeeper didn’t feature for the club against Lille and against Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup. So far in the season, Bain has made four appearances in all competitions for the Bhoys – including Sunday’s cup win over the Dons.
Do you think Bain should be Celtic's first choice goalkeeper?
Kelly had words of praise for Bain, saying: “Barkas came into that team, don’t get me wrong, Barkas still has time to prove himself, but for me, Bain is our number one. Because he’s been there when we needed him when the chips were down and he had to go in and debut against that lot and we won it 3-2. Don’t get me wrong, obviously to concede two goals in your debut game, it is nothing noteworthy, but the man has a treble under his belt. So when he’s in that net, he’s commanding respect.”
TIF Thoughts on Kelly’s comments about Scott Bain…
Bain initially joined Celtic on loan from Dundee FC in January 2018 and joined the Parkhead-based club on a permanent basis in the summer of 2018 on a free transfer (as per Transfermarkt).
In total, the 28-year-old has made 50 appearances in all competitions for the Bhoys and has kept 29 clean sheets during that time. As for Barkas, this is his first season in Scotland and because of that, Bain clearly has more experience of playing for Celtic. So it is understandable why Kelly believes that Bain should be Celtic’s first-choice goalkeeper.
