Celtic pundit Colin Watt has recently made a claim about the sentimental value that Neil Lennon carries at Parkhead.

Watt was a guest on the latest episode of the ‘A Celtic State of Mind’ podcast and the panel discussed multiple issues involving the Bhoys. One topic of discussion was Lennon and Watt believes that the manager’s sentimental value is the reason why he is still in the job at Parkhead.

The Hoops recently lost 4-1 to Sparta Prague in the Europa League and as a result, they have been knocked out of the competition. They are yet to win a single game in the Europa League and find themselves 11 points behind the Gers in the Premiership table (as per Transfermarkt).

Is Neil Lennon's sentimental value helping him right now?

Watt feels that since Lennon was the club’s captain in the past, he carries some sort of sentimental value.

He said: “For me, if he wasn’t Neil Lennon, he’d have been out of the door already. I think there’s still a sentiment to the fact that Neil Lennon was a captain, he was a fan-favourite when he was here and that he’d done the job that he’d done beforehand. I think there’s far too much sentimental value put on that and it probably affects the way that some fans think about Lennon right now.

“Because if it was any other manager on a run like this at the minute, he would be out of the door. Realistically, he’s going to be in the dugout come Sunday, because for whatever reason, the board think he can still do a job.”

TIF Thoughts on Watt’s comments regarding Lennon…

Lennon indeed was a remarkable player during his time at Parkhead. He won a total of five Premiership titles and won as many as four Scottish Cup titles too. He also managed to win two Scottish League Cup titles during his time at Parkhead as a player (as per Transfermarkt).

As a manager, he has already helped the club win five league titles and they also won the League Cup last season. Because of what he’s done for the club in the past, it is normal for Lennon to have a sentimental value.

Having said that, Celtic are looking to win their tenth title in a row this season and they can’t afford to slip up even more. So if Lennon can’t get things back on track soon enough, the Hoops should part ways with him.
