Celtic pundit Paul John Dykes has recently made a claim about the club’s striker Leigh Griffiths.

Dykes was recently hosting the latest episode of the ‘A Celtic State of Mind’ podcast and the panel discussed multiple issues involving the Bhoys. One topic of discussion was Griffiths and Dykes believes that Chris Sutton’s criticism for the striker wasn’t justified.

Following Celtic’s loss to Sparta Prague in the Europa League, Sutton had said that he’s not a fan of the Scotsman’s attitude and the striker is overweight, because of which he can’t play for 60 minutes in a game (as per the Daily Record). Griffiths is currently valued at £1.8m.

Is Griffiths still an important player for Celtic?

Dykes feels that if Celtic want to cut down the nine-point gap between themselves and Rangers, they need to play Griffiths.

He said: “So, where are we now? Are we at a stage where we’re trying to change the culture that was implemented initially by Neil Lennon? Because when Lenny’s big pal [Chris Sutton] is giving Griffiths a hard time – and I think he went over the top on that, by the way once – in relation to ‘look at the state of his fitness, he’s overweight’ and all this kind of stuff.

“And apparently, they’ve had words – they’ve had a telephone conversation about it. I thought that was completely OTT. The simple question I would ask at this moment in time when we’re nine points behind Rangers and they’ve got a far superior goal difference – yes I know they’ve played a couple of games extra – is if you play Leigh Griffiths, will he get us goals? And the answer to that question, quite simply, is yes.”

TIF Thoughts on Dykes’ comments regarding Griffiths…

While Griffiths had turned up for the club’s pre-season training in an overweight condition, he has now returned to action for Celtic. In three Premiership appearances, he has already scored two goals.

In the second half of last season, the Scotsman had scored seven times in the league and had picked up three assists during that period. In all competitions last season, he contributed to 15 goals in 31 games.

This suggests that Griffiths can still be an important goalscorer for Celtic and because of that, it is easy to understand why Dykes feels that the 30-year-old can still help the Bhoys cut down the gap between them and the Gers in the table.
