The Athletic’s Wolverhampton Wanderers correspondent Tim Spiers has discussed the recent injury to Belgian defensive midfielder Leander Dendoncker.

According to a recent report by Het Nieuwsblad, Dendoncker was recently replaced at half-time in Belgium’s game against Switzerland due to an injury issue.

It was claimed by the Belgian outlet that the defensive midfielder was, therefore, a doubt for the Red Devils’ clash with England on Sunday.

In the resulting 2-0 victory for the Belgians against the Three Lions, Wolves’ middleman did not feature in their matchday squad (per Sky Sports).

During the latest episode of The Athletic’s The Molineux View podcast, Spiers discussed Dendoncker’s injury and provided an update on him.

To kick off this quiz on Romain Saiss, what squad number does the defensive midfielder currently wear for the Old Gold?

He said: “Bad news on two fronts, really, in the international break; Coady with [going into self-isolation], and Dendoncker picking up an injury for Belgium.

“[Dendoncker] came off at half-time and has picked up groin and knee issues apparently, so, we’ll try and get word from Wolves this week as to whether he’s going to be out of that Southampton game but [it] doesn’t look good.”

TIF Thoughts on what Tim Spiers said about Leander Dendoncker’s injury…

As can be seen in what the journalist had to say, he believes that the situation “doesn’t look good” following the reported injury issue for the Belgian.

Would you class Leander Dendoncker as a key player for Wolves?

Yes, he's a solid player

No, he's not that good

No, he's not that good

Should Dendoncker be missing due to injury for an extended period of time, it will likely be a hefty blow for Wolves as he has been a key player for them so far this season.

Over his seven Premier League appearances, the 25-year-old defensive midfielder has earned a solid 6.92/10 average rating making him the Old Gold’s sixth-best performer (per WhoScored).

Not only that, but Dendoncker has also been the best tackler in Wolves’ squad of players still at the club as he has made an average of 2.1 tackles per league game.

So, hopefully, for Nuno Espirito Santo, the £25.2m-rated man will not be absent for an extended period of time as he is an important defensive player for Wolves.
