Football journalist David Ornstein has been discussing Wolves winger Adama Traore and his current contract situation at the Midlands club.

This comes after Ornstein recently co-hosted the latest episode of The Athletic’s Ornstein & Chapman Podcast where he spoke about all the biggest news stories in football at the moment.

To kick off this quiz on Romain Saiss, what squad number does the defensive midfielder currently wear for the Old Gold?

After it was reported that Traore and Wolves have reached a ‘deadlock’ in their negotiations for the winger to sign a new deal at the club, Ornstein had this to say on the situation.

He said: “Adama Traore was one of Wolves’ key players over the last year or so and he’s attracted interest from a lot of clubs, it seemed that a new contract would be a formality. There’s no real rush on this; he’s under contract until 2023. But he’s suddenly slipped out the team, I don’t think he’s started since late September, and from people we’ve spoken to, it seems he feels he’s being left out of the team because the contract negotiations have kind of hit a deadlock and there’s a stand-off between the two parties.

“People I think, at Wolves say that’s not true and it’s purely down to football reasons and Nuno Espirito Santo and Adama himself aren’t involved in the negotiations, it’s people on their behalf – but it’s strange because he’s obviously made progress in recent times at international level as well, he is extremely dangerous a player.

“If he was to leave, Wolves would be expecting [at least] double the £18 million they paid Middlesbrough for him in 2018. But yeah, that’s a really interesting story and one to watch, especially because we know that some of the Premier League and Europe’s biggest clubs have been linked with him in the past.”

As Ornstein mentioned in the podcast, Wolves signed Traore back in the 2018 summer transfer window from Middlesbrough for a fee of £18 million.

Since then, the Spaniard has gone on to make 99 appearances for the Old Gold in which he has managed to score seven goals and provide 15 assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).

Do you think Traore will eventually sign a new contract with Wolves?

TIF Thoughts on David Ornstein’s comments on Traore’s contract situation…

Even though he may not have too many goals and assists during his time at Wolves, Traore’s performances in their 2019/20 Premier League proved just how important he is for the club.

The winger’s performances in the 37 league appearances he made last season saw him earn a solid season rating of 7.49/10, making him Wolves’ highest-rated player (per WhoScored).

This shows just how important Traore has been for Wolves and why in our view, they should do all they can to make sure the winger pens a new deal at Molineux.
