West Ham United journalist Roshane Thomas has been discussing the east London club’s transfer link to Philadelphia Union full-back Kai Wagner.

This comes after Thomas recently made an appearance on The Athletic’s West Ham-themed podcast U Irons, where he spoke about a range of different topics concerning David Moyes’ side.

Who did West Ham United face in their opening fixture of the 2020/21 Premier League season?

On the topic of potential transfers the club could make in the upcoming January window, Thomas had this to say on Wagner in particular.

He said: “Another player West Ham have been linked with is a left-back called Kai Wagner, who plays for Philadelphia Union in America [in] MLS.

“It’s a transfer I could see West Ham doing, for the simple fact that [they] could do with a backup for [Arthur] Masuaku, because if he were to get an injury, you sort of see [Aaron] Cresswell playing that role, and then that frees up [Angelo] Ogbonna, so it’d be good to have another option at left-back.

“He’s 23, born in Germany, but yeah, a player West Ham also rate, so that’s another deal they could look to do in January.”

The left-back, who is currently valued at £900k, signed to the MLS club back in February 2019 for an undisclosed fee.

Since then, the German has made 50 appearances for Philadelphia Union in which he has managed to score one goal and provide eight assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts on Roshane Thomas’ comments on West Ham’s interest in Wagner…

Even though West Ham currently have Aaron Cresswell and Arthur Masuaku in their squad that can play in the left-back position, while both have impressed so far this season with average WhoScored match ratings over 7/10, maybe signing Wagner in January may not be a bad option due to his cheap market value and the fact that he could provide an alternative option for Moyes should either Cresswell or Masuaku pick up an injury, like many other teams have suffered so far this season in this truncated campaign.
