Speaking recently on The West Ham Way Podcast, ExWHUemployee discussed West Ham United’s interest in Olympique Lyon striker, Moussa Dembele.

Since moving to Lyon from Celtic in what was a £19.8 million deal back in 2018, Dembele has gone on to feature 103 times for the club, scoring an impressive 44 goals and providing 13 assists along the way.

Who did West Ham United face in their opening fixture of the 2020/21 Premier League season?

However, so far this season, the £36 million-rated 24-year-old has struggled over his 11 appearances in Ligue 1, scoring no goals and providing no assists, while averaging a disappointing WhoScored match rating of 6.35 – ranking him as the club’s joint second-worst performer in the French top flight.

Despite this downturn in form, France Football (via TEAMtalk) recently reported that West Ham are closely watching the former France U21 international, a claim that was backed up by ExWHUemployee on a recent episode of The West Ham Way Podcast.

When discussing potential attacking targets for David Moyes’ side in the January transfer window, he said: “Dembele of Lyon is also another player that we’ve considered and had a look at – the former Celtic and Fulham forward that we’ve been after on occasions in the past.”

TIF Thoughts on ExWHUemployee’s comments regarding Moussa Dembele…

From ExWHUemployee’s comments, it would seem as if West Ham are indeed interested in the possibility of signing Dembele, although the podcaster doesn’t go into depth as to whether or not he believes a move for the forward could be likely this January.

In any case, it remains debatable as to whether or not Lyon would be open to selling the 24-year-old, as, last January, when rumours of a €50 million (£44.7 million) bid from Manchester United for Dembele were circulating, the club’s president, Jean-Michel Aulas, stated that he was desperate for the forward to stay at Lyon.

As such, in our opinion, it would appear to be unlikely that West Ham manage to get a deal over the line for Dembele this coming January.
