Tottenham Hotspur journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke has been sharing his thoughts on the north London club’s decision to sack former manager Mauricio Pochettino and replace him with current boss Jose Mourinho.

This comes after Pitt-Brooke recently hosted the latest episode of The Athletic’s Spurs-themed podcast The View From The Lane where he spoke about a number of different topics concerning the Lilywhites.

How well can you remember Spurs' season so far? 1. Who is Spurs' top scorer in all competitions so far this season?

As we are currently approaching the one-year anniversary of Pochettino’s departure and Mourinho’s appointment at Tottenham, Pitt-Brooke had this to say on the matter.

He said: “The decision to sack Pochettino and bring in Mourinho, which is basically, I think arguably the biggest decision [Daniel] Levy has made in his time at Tottenham, short of like, deciding to build a new stadium over the pre-existing Tottenham stadium instead of moving to Stratford or doing something else.

“I think it’s the biggest football decision he’s had to make – sacking Pochettino and bringing in Mourinho – and I mean, almost a year on from it, I think it’s probably working out better than I expected it to, to be honest, in terms of the direction the team and the football they’re playing. I mean, of course, it’s too early to tell, but I don’t feel like it’s been a disaster at all.”

During his time at Spurs, Pochettino took charge of 293 games across all competitions in which they won 160, drew 60 and lost 73 along the way (per Transfermarkt).

When Pochettino left the club, Spurs were in 14th place in the Premier League table but ended the 2019/20 campaign in sixth place with 59 points after Mourinho took over.

TIF Thoughts on Jack Pitt-Brooke’s comments on Spurs’ decision to sack Pochettino and appoint Mourinho…

Taking into account their league position at the time, it was understandable why the club thought it was the right decision to sack Pochettino.

So far this season, Spurs sit in second place in the table after winning five, drawing two and losing one of their first eight league matches, which shows that Mourinho has had a much better start to this season than Pochettino had last year.

In our view, and as Pitt-Brooke mentioned in the podcast, it would be too early to definitively say whether Mourinho’s appointment has been a successful one, but right now it feels like it has been a step forward for Spurs given their impressive start in the Portuguese’s first full season.
