Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Gary Mabbutt recently took part in an interview on the Spurs-themed YouTube channel We Are Tottenham TV.

The former England international, a UEFA Cup and FA Cup winner with the Lilywhites, discussed a number of topics with regards to his former club and was asked whether he has been “excited” by Spurs’ start to the season. Here is what he had to say:

“[After] the first two games, no. I was very concerned. But what is incredible [is] – I’m not sure if people realise it – just the re-signing of Gareth Bale, the impact that has had, how it’s changed the dynamics in the dressing room, the belief of the players.”

How well can you remember Spurs' season so far? 1. Who is Spurs' top scorer in all competitions so far this season?

“We’ve now got a manager that has won 25 titles; we’ve brought in Joe Hart, who has won many titles; we’ve brought in Gareth, who has won everything; and so adding that to the squad that we’ve got – plus, we’ve had the best transfer window we’ve had for a long time, and when I look at our squad now, I’m very excited and watching the games recently, I think things are starting to fall into place.”

Do you think Spurs can challenge for the Premier League title this season?

TIF Thoughts on Mabbutt’s views on Gareth Bale’s signing at Spurs…

Based on Mabbutt’s comments, we can assume he believes the experience of those who have won silverware elsewhere being added to the squad enhances Spurs’ chances of ending their trophy drought.

He also mentioned the transfer window and praised the signings of Bale and Hart, with Daniel Levy behind the capture of the Welshman. However, they’re not the only additions Jose Mourinho made to his squad over the summer. Defensive trio Sergio Reguilon, Matt Doherty and Joe Rodon, as well as Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Carlos Vinicius from Benfica also joined the club (as per Transfermarkt), which in our view, added further top-flight experience and depth to the squad.

At present, Spurs currently sit second in the Premier League, just a point behind leaders Leicester City, but with last season’s runners-up Manchester City to come after the international break, perhaps we will learn more about whether or not “things are starting to fall into place”.
