A lot of Tottenham Hotspur fans have flocked to Twitter to slam Matt Doherty following the Lilywhites’ 2-1 Premier League win over Brighton & Hove Albion this past weekend.
Doherty played the full 90 minutes on Sunday and you could argue that he didn’t put in a bad performance.
As per WhoScored, the 28-year-old was fouled the joint-second-highest number of times (two), made the highest number of tackles (four) and the highest number of interceptions (three) of any Tottenham player in this game.
The Republic of Ireland international was also given the third-highest overall WhoScored rating (7.10) of any Spurs player versus Brighton, trailing only Harry Kane and Gareth Bale – the north London club’s two goalscorers in Sunday’s fixture.
So, how have these Spurs fans reacted to Doherty’s performance versus Brighton?
Doherty was awful again, 100% pen

Doherty is actually a shambles

Doherty looks totally off it, The RB is a cursed position.. I swear we could sign prime Cafu and make him look like Phil jones.

My biggest concern going forward is at Right Back as it’s a huge weakness. Doherty has not performed and actually has been a bigger liability than Aurier at times. Should have given away another pen today if not for useless VAR #COYS

Despite those positive stats, many Lilywhites fans have been criticising the £18m-rated right-back on Twitter following Sunday’s game.
100% in agreement, that was total garbage today all over the park, Doherty awful, haven’t seen one good thing from him since he arrived, I hope Jose hadn’t started a war with Aurier

Doherty is horrendous all he does is pass the ball to the right centre back, that’s literally all he does?
— N A T H (@Nath_THFC) November 1, 2020
Doherty is very clumsy

Doherty was signed by the north London club back in August and some Spurs fans have cast some doubt over whether or not this was a wise piece of transfer business following this 2-1 win over Brighton, with one Lilywhites supporter stating that they think this is a ‘bad signing’ and some other Tottenham fans questioning if the 28-year-old is better than fellow Spurs right-back Serge Aurier, who has been at the club since August 2017.
Were you impressed by Doherty's performance versus Brighton?
YES
NO
Still massively struggling with Doherty really not sure he’s better than Aurier
— Dan (@Daniely79) November 1, 2020
And Lamptey is so good while Doherty still hasn’t impressed. Looking like a bad signing tbf

Fair enough but the switch from RWB to RB shouldn’t be that hard. Doherty can’t defend. Even going forward he hasn’t been looking to good. Aurier out performing him defensively and attacking should say something

So, it certainly seems from these Spurs fans’ tweets that plenty of the north London club’s fans weren’t impressed by Doherty’s performance versus Brighton.
