Tottenham Hotspur journalist Alasdair Gold has been sharing his praise for Lilywhites defender Toby Alderweireld for his display during the north London club’s 2-0 win over Manchester City at the weekend.

This comes after Gold recently uploaded a video onto his YouTube channel where he reflected on the win against the Manchester club.

How well can you remember Spurs' season so far? 1. Who is Spurs' top scorer in all competitions so far this season?

On the topic of Alderweireld, who started the match on Saturday but was forced off with an injury in the second half, Gold had this to say on the Belgian.

He said: “Toby Alderweireld, I thought probably had the best game I’ve seen him have for years. He really did roll back the years, this was vintage Alderweireld. He was very good on the ball, he made two terrific blocks/tackles on Gabriel Jesus in the first half, one in the box as he was about to shoot, one just outside the area.

“I thought he was phenomenal, and he had a part in the second goal as well [he] played a very clever first-time ball out to [Harry] Kane in the centre of the pitch.”

Alderweireld’s performance in the match against City before he suffered the injury earned him a match rating of 7.44/10, making him the third-highest rated player for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Defensively, Alderweireld, who is currently valued at £18 million, made two interceptions, seven clearances and blocked three shots against City (per WhoScored).

TIF Thoughts Alasdair Gold’s comments on Alderweireld…

Looking at his match rating and the defensive contributions he gave Tottenham during their win over City, as previously mentioned, it comes as no surprise that Gold has singled out the 31-year-old for praise.

In our view, Alderweireld’s injury has come at a very bad time for the Belgian after just putting in this impressive performance for Spurs. Hopefully, the injury he sustained at the weekend will not be a bad one and he will be able to get back in action and put in solid performances for the club again as soon as possible.

Do you think Spurs have enough defensive cover while Alderweireld is out?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Looking at Spurs’ current squad, Japhet Tanganga is the only other centre-half that is out with an injury, so now that Alderweireld looks set for a spell out on the side-lines, the club will now be looking at Eric Dier, Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez to fill in for the time being.
