Former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino was recently a guest on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, and he spent some time talking about his time with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Argentinian spent five and a half years with the North London club, before being sacked in November of last year (per Transfermarkt). During his time with the Lilywhites, the former Southampton boss would take charge of 293 matches, winning 160, drawing 60 and losing 73, resulting in a strong points-per-game average of 1.84 (per Transfermarkt). The 48-year-old also took Spurs to their first-ever Champions League final in 2019, where they ultimately lost out 2-0 against Liverpool (per BBC Sport).

How well can you remember Spurs' season so far? 1. Who is Spurs' top scorer in all competitions so far this season?

During the recent Monday Night Football coverage, which was recorded for the Sky Sports podcast, Pochettino was asked about Spurs’ reputation for losing big games, to which he replied:

“Yes, [we were] a little bit ashamed, we were so upset every time we [heard] people say bad things about the Spurs mentality. We were really upset because we understood what it means for Tottenham [to always be] behind Arsenal, that was so painful for our fans and the whole club. [Fans] on the street [would] stop us, ‘please, we can’t finish below [Arsenal]’ – that was like [winning] the Champions League for the [fans].”

Pochettino suggests that it really upset him and his players to hear people referring to the ‘Spurs mentality‘ of losing big games and failing to win trophies, but also perhaps suggests that they may have done something to rectify this, suggesting that a lot of fans were desperate to see them finish above their north London rivals Arsenal, which they have now managed in every season since the 2016/17 campaign.

However, you imagine that until they end their long wait for a trophy, with their last honour coming in the form of a League Cup in 2008, the ‘Spurs mentality’ may well be something that continues to be associated with the Lilywhites.
