Speaking recently on the Ask Ornstein YouTube show, David Ornstein discussed the loan deal of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Gedson Fernandes.

Since arriving at Spurs from Benfica on loan back in January, Fernandes has gone on to feature just 13 times for Jose Mourinho’s side, scoring no goals and providing no assists.

How well can you remember Spurs' season so far? 1. Who is Spurs' top scorer in all competitions so far this season?

So far this season, the £12.15 million-rated 21-year-old has featured just once for Tottenham, playing 63 minutes of the club’s victory over Chelsea in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Due to this lack of game time, Mourinho recently told SporTV (via Sport Witness) that if Benfica wanted to ‘end the relationship’ between Spurs and Fernandes earlier than when his loan deal is due to expire next summer, then Tottenham would ‘collaborate’ because they ‘want the good of the player’.

The Portugal U21 international was one subject of discussion on a recent episode of the Ask Ornstein YouTube show, in which the journalist suggested that the player could be heading back to Benfica in January.

In response to a question asking whether he believed Fernandes could be recalled early by Benfica, Ornstein said: “The Gedson Fernandes loan from Benfica was 18 months, and so it doesn’t officially expire until the summer. It hasn’t worked out nearly as well as hoped and Gedson may head back to Portugal in the winter.”

TIF Thoughts on David Ornstein’s comments regarding Gedson Fernandes…

From Ornstein’s comments, it is clear that the journalist believes there is the possibility of Fernandes’ loan deal being cut short, which would see him return to Portugal in the January transfer window.

We have to say, considering Fernandes has been left out of Tottenham’s Europa League squad, as well as seven out of eight of their matchday squads in the Premier League this season, in our opinion, it would seem best for both the player and Tottenham if his parent club were to cancel the loan deal early, as the midfielder could get back to playing regular minutes for Benfica, while Tottenham would be freed of whatever financial commitments they may have regarding the player’s wages.
