The Pod On The Tyne podcast host Taylor Payne has recently slated Newcastle United’s Irish midfielder Jeff Hendrick.

During the summer transfer window, the Toon secured the services of the 28-year-old middleman on a free transfer from fellow Premier League club Burnley (per BBC).

Since his arrival in the North East, Hendrick has made eight top-flight appearances for Newcastle, in which he has scored once and assisted once (per WhoScored).

His performances over the outings have earned the Irishman a fairly respectable 6.61/10 average rating which has made him the joint-sixth-best performer in Steve Bruce’s squad.

During the latest episode of the Pod On The Tyne podcast, Payne discussed Hendrick and slated the midfielder for his performance in the recent 2-0 defeat against Southampton.

A nice easy one to start off with. Who scored Newcastle's opening goal of the 2020/21 PL season?

He said: “I said on Friday night, after the game, that Jeff Hendrick appeared to be a sentient pile of meat in a football shirt and had absolutely no impact on the game whatsoever.

“You could have put a traffic cone in the middle of midfield and it probably would have done more good.

“He was just non-existent, but what then happens is you’ve got Sean Longstaff legging it about and not playing to his strengths.

“And then you’ve got Miguel Almiron, who’s having to do loads of defensive donkey work, which he seems to be willing to do, but it’s not what I want from him.”

TIF Thoughts on what Taylor Payne said about Jeff Hendrick…

As can be seen in what the podcast host had to say, he was not impressed with Hendrick’s display during the recent loss against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Saints.

During the defeat, the Irishman was substituted off in the second half and earned a weak 5.74/10 performance rating, which made him the Toon’s third-worst performer on the day (per WhoScored).

Interestingly, the only players to earn a worse rating than Hendrick for Newcastle were the two other players Payne mentioned – Almiron (5.36/10) and Longstaff (5.2/10).

However, due to the 28-year-old midfielder’s poor performance rating, it is clear to see why the podcast host was unimpressed with the Irishman in particular.
