Steve Wraith and Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy spent a lot of time talking about Newcastle Consortium Supporters Limited’s (NCSL) Letter Before Action to the Premier League, in relation to the English top-flight’s alleged breach of UK anti-competition law, during the latest edition of NUFC Matters

NCSL confirmed that they would like to take their case against the Premier League, over their refusal to approve the Toon takeover deal which was brokered between current Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley and the would-be buyers – Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, PCP Capital Partners and the Reuben brothers – to the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT).

Who will the Toon play in the next round of the Carabao Cup after they beat Newport County on penalties?

While answering questions from viewers during this recent edition of NUFC Matters, Kennedy was asked about the possibility of Ashley taking action of his own against the English top-flight over their refusal to approve this £300m deal that would see him sell the North East club and on that topic, he said:

“There’s absolutely nothing stopping him running a different action. I think we’ll probably see things play out in the next few weeks. There could be any number of twists and turns in this. It’s impossible for me to sit here and second-guess, third-guess where this might go and what might happen. There are so many plates spinning here that anything could literally happen.”

Do you think Ashley will take action vs the Premier League?

TIF Thoughts on what Kennedy had to say about the possibility of Ashley taking action against the Premier League…

While Kennedy didn’t suggest that Ashley is going to take action against the Premier League, he certainly didn’t rule it out, with the journalist confirming that the Toon owner could do so if he wants to.

After releasing a statement via Newcastle United’s official website in which he claimed that the Premier League ‘rejected’ this takeover bid – an allegation that the English top-flight disputed – Ashley reportedly hired ‘two leading QCs’ – Shaheed Fatima QC and Nick De Marco QC – to represent the club in their dispute with England’s top-flight.

With that in mind, perhaps it won’t be a major surprise if Ashley does take action of his own against the Premier League as it would seem as though it’s something he has been considering, so it will be interesting to see if any more progress is made on that front.
