The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder discussed all of the latest Newcastle United news on the most recent edition of the Everything is Black and White podcast and spent some time talking about the Toon’s potential January transfer business during the show.

The Toon made five permanent additions to their squad in the summer transfer window, including centre-forward Callum Wilson – who commanded the highest outlay of any of their summer signings, with the club spending £20.03m to secure the player’s services.

Who will the Toon play in the next round of the Carabao Cup after they beat Newport County on penalties?

However, when asked about the possibility of the North East club conducting more transfer business in January, Ryder revealed that Steve Bruce’s side may be in the market for another striker, saying:

“I think they’ve looked at strikers. There’s certainly one name that’s been put to me who they’ve looked at – but if I say it on here, I’ll have one less story to write over the international break, so I’ll keep it on the notepad for now.”

Do Newcastle need to sign a striker in January?

TIF Thoughts on what Ryder had to say about Newcastle’s potential January transfer business…

Newcastle have currently got four out-and-out centre-forwards in their first-team squad, however, they have relied heavily on summer signing Wilson for goals this term.

The 28-year-old has netted six of the Toon’s 10 Premier League goals this season, while no other Newcastle player has managed to score more than once in the league so far this term.

In addition to outscoring every other Toon player by some distance so far this year, Wilson has already scored as many league goals this term as any Newcastle player managed to score in the Premier League last season – a considerable feat after just eight games of the current campaign.

With Wilson currently sidelined due to injury, it may be fair to say that the North East club are significantly weakened and perhaps that highlights their lack of quality depth in this position.

As a result, maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea for them to dip into the market for another striker in January, as Ryder suggested they may, and it will be interesting to see if they do end up making a move for another centre-forward – and indeed, which striker they are reportedly interested in.
