Liverpool journalist Lauren Black has shed some light on Reds captain Jordan Henderson and the leadership qualities he shows on the pitch.
This comes after Black’s assessment of Liverpool’s 5-0 win over Atalanta in the Champions League was featured on the latest episode of the Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red Podcast.
During her summary of the win in Italy that saw Diogo Jota, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah secure all three points for the Reds, Black had this to say on Henderson’s contributions in the game.
She said: “The one thing I noticed throughout the 90 minutes due to having no fans in the stadium is just how much communication you can hear between the players. For the entire time he was on the pitch, Jordan Henderson was talking to every single player throughout every bit of play – giving encouragement, giving out little pieces of advice to people, egging people on, basically.
“I think there was a moment where Curtis Jones was trying to press the ball and you can hear him shouting and giving him encouragement so that just proves how much of a good leader he is on the pitch.”
During the match against Atalanta, Henderson made a total of 73 passes in the game with a passing accuracy percentage of 93.2%, ultimately earning himself a solid match rating of 7.32/10 (per WhoScored).

Even though Henderson didn’t manage to register a goal or an assist against Atalanta in midweek, it’s clear from what Black said in her assessment of the game that the Englishman still made some big contributions in the game vocally by communicating and encouraging his teammates on the pitch.
As Black mentioned in the podcast, this is exactly what the captain of a football team should be doing on the pitch and it’s great to hear that Henderson is playing that role effectively.
