Liverpool journalist Ian Doyle has relayed the latest fitness update concerning Reds midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

This comes after Doyle recently made an appearance on the latest episode of the Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red Podcast where he spoke about all the latest goings-on at Anfield.

First up in this Steven Gerrard quiz, how old is the former Liverpool man?

On the topic of Thiago and his current fitness situation, Doyle had this to say on the matter.

He said: “[Jurgen] Klopp said he’s not too far away, but without wanting to commit to any kind of date, the suggestion, it sounds like, [is] as though he might not be too far away, possibly not Atalanta, but maybe Brighton.”

In his recent press conference ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash against Atalanta, Jurgen Klopp said that Thiago hasn’t returned to team training yet and that he doesn’t know when the Spaniard will be able to do so.

Liverpool signed Thiago in the previous summer transfer window from Bayern Munich for a fee of £19.8 million. In his debut season at the Merseyside club, Thiago has only managed to make two appearances so far, his first coming in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Chelsea in the Premier League and then the other coming in their 2-2 draw against Everton, also in the league.

The midfielder missed Liverpool’s 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa and their Carabao Cup defeat to Arsenal as he had to enter self-isolation. He has then missed a number of Liverpool game since the draw against Everton with a knee injury (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts on Ian Doyle’s comments on Thiago…

With Thiago not playing a minute of action for the Reds since October and the fact that Klopp not previously having a clear idea as to when the 29-year-old will be able to return to training, the midfielder’s current fitness situation is starting to become a concern, in our view.

Having earned himself a solid match rating of 7.26/10 for his performance in the game against Everton last month, this shows that he could be a very useful figure in this Liverpool side and for Klopp, who will undoubtedly want to see Thiago back fit and available to play as soon as possible in order to deliver performances of a similar standard on a consistent basis.
