Liverpool journalist Simon Hughes has revealed that he is ‘concerned’ over the number of injuries that the Merseyside club currently have within their squad.

This comes after Hughes recently made an appearance on The Athletic’s Liverpool-themed podcast The Red Agenda, where he spoke about a number of different topics concerning Jurgen Klopp’s side.

First up in this Steven Gerrard quiz, how old is the former Liverpool man?

On the subject of Liverpool’s current crop of injuries, Hughes had this to say on the matter. (13.23)

He said: “I’m a bit concerned about the number of injuries that Liverpool have got because I don’t think the squad can really afford to have any more to key players, because I don’t think Jurgen Klopp was exaggerating – there are genuine concerns that they’re going to run out of established first-team players anyway soon if they get two or three more injuries.

“They certainly can’t afford for that to happen in midfield or defence, so it’d be interesting how they deal with that.”

Liverpool currently have Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk out with long-term injuries, as well as Trent Alexander-Arnold out with a calf injury and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out with a knee issue (per Transfermarkt).

Meanwhile, in Liverpool’s recent 3-0 win over Leicester City at the weekend, Reds midfielder Naby Keita was forced off the pitch with an injury of his own.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Keita “went down early in the second half and was stretching out his right leg before the physios came over to attend to him.”

TIF Thoughts on Simon Hughes’ comments on Liverpool’s injuries…

Given how many injuries Liverpool have at the moment and their hefty fixture schedule, it’s no wonder Hughes is concerned about the squad at the moment.

With the upcoming January transfer window on the horizon, maybe the Merseyside club could use that as an opportunity to bring in some new players that can help fill in for their current players who are out injured.

Do you think Liverpool will sign anyone in January?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Looking back over previous January windows, Liverpool have signed players such as Takumi Minamino and Van Dijk in the past, which shows that they have not been shy about splashing the cash in January.

In our view, with Gomez and Van Dijk out with long-term injuries, it may be a good idea for Liverpool to sign at least one centre-back to fill in for the rest of the season and hope that their other injury worries ease off over the coming weeks and months.
