Phil Hay has been speaking on the latest edition of The Athletic’s The Phil Hay Show about all things relating to Leeds United.

Starting with an easy one what shirt number does Bamford wear for Leeds United?

One of the topics that he spent a little bit of time on was injuries as he discussed defender Diego Llorente, who has not played one game for the Whites since he joined them from Real Sociedad in the last transfer window.

The Spanish international was on the bench for the game against Manchester City, but then went away on international duty in October and suffered an injury that has kept him out since.

However, Hay thinks that he could finally be closing in on a return.

He said: “I don’t think Diego Llorente should be too far away, either.

“Certainly, his projected timescale of recovery from his groin strain is up now.

“He had been doing some running, it will be Bielsa’s call, ultimately, where he sees him at.”

Do you think Llorente could improve Leeds' defence?

TIF Thoughts on Diego Llorente and Phil Hay’s information on his injury…

Llorente is valued at £18m by Transfermarkt and made 88 appearances for Real Sociedad as well as six appearances for Spain’s senior side, so he has some pedigree, and we think it is a shame that he has not seen any action yet.

However, it appears as if he is closing in on a return from injury, and then he could finally make his debut in the near future.

Leeds have so far conceded a joint-high of 17 goals in the Premier League, including a combined total of seven in their first two games and eight across their last two fixtures – so perhaps Llorente’s return could shore up that defence.

It remains to be seen, but we think that it is good that he appears to be edging closer to a return from injury, and it will be interesting to see if his experience in La Liga and on the international stage can improve this Leeds defence over time.
