Speaking on a recent episode of The View from The Lane podcast, Charlie Eccleshare discussed Tottenham Hotspur forward Gareth Bale and his belief that the Welshman is getting back to his best at Spurs.

Following his return to north London from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window, prior to the club’s fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend, Bale had featured in three games for Spurs, failing to score in any of those appearances.

How well can you remember Spurs' season so far? 1. Who is Spurs' top scorer in all competitions so far this season?

However, after being brought on as a second-half substitute in the Brighton fixture, with the score level at 1-1, the 31-year-old guided a 73rd-minute header into the opposition net, bagging his first goal since his return to the club and securing all three points for Jose Mourinho’s side.

The Welshman was one topic of conversation on a recent episode of The View from The Lane podcast, in which Eccleshare claimed that Bale is slowly but surely getting back up to full speed for Tottenham, after recovering from a knee injury that he had upon his arrival in north London.

He said: “I think he is [getting closer to full fitness], but I think that is just [about] playing games. They obviously know from his GPS what his numbers are saying and they have a pretty clear idea when they think he’ll have enough minutes in the legs.

“He has had injuries. He’s not played a huge amount of football since June – late June was his last game for Real Madrid. So, I think he is [getting better] with each game. He has to be carefully managed, but obviously, it helps a lot when he shows that even at 70-80% fitness he can still score goals like he did [against Brighton].”

TIF Thoughts on Charlie Eccleshare’s comments regarding Gareth Bale…

From Eccleshare’s comments, it is clear that the journalist is of the belief that Bale is gradually getting back to full fitness at Tottenham, and that even while he may not be at the top of his game just yet, he is demonstrating that he still has the ability to have an effect on a match, despite being at ’70-80%’ fitness.

While Bale’s goal is arguably the best demonstration of his qualities since his Tottenham return, it perhaps remains to be seen whether Eccleshare is right to suggest that things are just building up from the Welshman – with the next few weeks sure to determine whether Bale’s improving fitness will translate to a greater level of performance for Spurs.
