The Liverpool Echo’s Chris Beesley has recently discussed Everton’s English defender Mason Holgate and his impending return from injury.

So far this season, the 24-year-old defender has not made a single appearance for the Toffees in all competitions (per WhoScored).

Holgate has been absent since he suffered a toe injury during the 2-0 victory over Championship club Preston North End during pre-season (per Everton).

However, as stated in a recent report by the Liverpool Echo, Holgate is ‘back running’ and has ‘returned to training’ following his injury issue.

During a recent episode of the Liverpool Echo’s Royal Blue: The Everton FC Podcast, Beesley discussed Holgate’s impending return to action for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

To kick off this quiz on Abdoulaye Doucoure, what shirt number does the Frenchman currently wear for Everton?

He said: “His play has come on leaps and bounds since Carlo’s been at the club. I mean, he quickly became one of the most important players under the new management.

“They’ve been short in that position until the recent acquisition of [Ben] Godfrey, whose, ironically, first two appearances have both come at right-back.

“At least you’re going to have that competition for places now, you hope. They’ve been light for over a year now, ever since the summer before last when Kurt Zouma’s loan expired and Phil Jagielka was released.

“I’m sure Mason’s chomping at the bit and can’t wait to get back in there, because I think unless Yerry Mina can cut out these mistakes, it is a big concern.”

TIF Thoughts on what Chris Beesley said about Mason Holgate…

As can be seen in what the journalist had to say, he believes that the return of Holgate will provide the Toffees with the competition that they need at centre-back.

Should Mason Holgate go straight into the starting lineup when fit?

Last season, the English defender certainly proved to be a consistent performer for the Toffees as he earned a 6.77/10 average rating over 27 Premier League appearances (per WhoScored).

That rating made Holgate the seventh-best performer in Ancelotti’s squad in the league, so, hopefully, upon his return from injury, he can deliver impressive performances for the club again.
