Speaking on a recent episode of the Last Word On Spurs podcast, financial advisor and Tottenham Hotspur fan Adam Osper shed light on the current situation of Spurs left-back Danny Rose.

Since moving to Spurs from the Leeds United youth setup in what was a £900k deal back in 2007, Rose has gone on to make 214 appearances for the north London side, chipping in with 10 goals and providing 29 assists along the way.

How well can you remember Spurs' season so far? 1. Who is Spurs' top scorer in all competitions so far this season?

However, following the appointment of Jose Mourinho as Tottenham manager in November 2019, the £9 million-rated 30-year-old featured just five more times for Spurs in the 2019/20 season, before being sent out on loan to Newcastle United in the January transfer window.

So far this season, the England international has not featured for the Tottenham first team at all and has been left out of the club’s 25-man Premier League squad.

However, according to Sky Sports (via BeSoccer), Rose is unwilling to receive a penny less than the €2.8 million (£2.5 million) he is owed over the remainder of his contract, which expires next summer, should the club wish to terminate his deal early.

This was one subject of conversation on a recent episode of the Last Word On Spurs podcast, in which Osper explained the potential reasoning behind Rose’s stance on the matter.

He said: “It’s really sad. He was a great, great full-back for a couple of years. I think it is sad. If you take a step back and you look at it, he’s 30 years old – he’s never going to get paid the money that he’s on at Spurs now.

“So, you’re asking him to go to a Championship club – I don’t quite know who’s in for him – but [the] money that the Championship club might offer, given the current crisis, might be 25% of what he’s on now.

“So, if you have a guaranteed income, at 30 years old, in a [pandemic] crisis, where clubs don’t have money, and you don’t know where you’re going to go and get good money, and you’re getting paid – let’s say he’s getting paid £2 million a year – why would you give that up?”

TIF Thoughts on Adam Osper’s comments regarding Danny Rose…

From Osper’s comments, it is clear that he completely understands where Rose is coming from by apparently being happy to sit it out at Spurs and pick up his wages each month, as he believes the uncertainty in football caused by the pandemic has not made it an easy market for a player to go and find a new club who would offer similar wages to what they are currently on.

However, an argument against this could be that Rose is also taking a risk to how much a new club may be willing to offer him now, in comparison to next summer, as after what could be a season of playing next to little competitive football, he could be viewed by a potential new suitor as a less valuable asset than he currently is.
