The Athletic’s Southampton correspondent Dan Sheldon has been discussing the injury sustained by Danny Ings during the club’s victory over Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side went 4-0 up in the Midlands thanks to Jannik Vestergaard’s opener, two free-kicks from James Ward-Prowse and a goal from Ings just short of the hour mark (as per BBC Sport). Although Dean Smith’s side rallied late on, scoring twice in stoppage time to close the deficit between the two sides, the Saints were able to hold on and ensure they left Villa Park with all three points.

Who scored Southampton's first goal of the season?

However, one negative for the visitors was the injury picked up by Ings in the late stages of the game. Here is what Sheldon had to say on the Total Saints podcast with regards to any update on the 28-year-old’s condition.

“After the game, let’s face it – [Ings would] have been in the dressing room, so I think it’s important to not speculate too much. All Ralph said about it really… was along the lines of ‘it didn’t look good’, which, we’ve all seen the pictures, it didn’t look great. Of course, he doesn’t want it to be bad – and that Danny was shouting, ‘my knee, my knee.’

“That’s all we know at the moment. Fingers crossed for Jan [Bednarek], Ryan [Bertrand] and Danny that it is nothing too serious and they can all be back for the Newcastle game.”

TIF Thoughts on Dan Sheldon’s comments regarding Danny Ings…

Ings has started this season in fine form, scoring five goals and providing his teammates with two assists in his opening seven Premier League games (as per Transfermarkt). During the 2019/20 campaign, only Jamie Vardy (23) scored more goals than the Englishman (22) and so it could be argued this fine run of form is more than just a flash in the pan.

Although Sheldon couldn’t reveal any further details regarding the knee injury Ings appeared to sustain, he emphasised the point that “it didn’t look great” and so there is a chance he could now face a spell on the sidelines. Taking into consideration he scored 43% of Southampton’s league goals last season, you can understand why there may be some concern around the possibility of him facing some time out of action.
