Fabrizio Romano spent some time discussing Arsenal’s interest in signing Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai during the latest edition of his Here We Go podcast.

This past summer, the Gunners were said to have been ‘in advanced negotiations over a deal’ to sign the Hungary international, who is allegedly a ‘long-term target’ of the north London club but they didn’t sign him in last summer’s transfer window and during this recent edition of his Here We Go podcast, Romano declared that Arsenal are not in advanced negotiations to sign the 20-year-old, though the journalist did say that Szoboszlai is a transfer target for Mikel Arteta’s side.

In what month did Mikel Arteta take over as the Arsenal boss?

Romano said: “At the moment, it’s not advanced, I want to clarify, there is nothing advanced between Arsenal and Szoboszlai. He’s [on] the list. They have, obviously, a list, as top clubs do when they have top targets.

“So, they were working for [Houssem] Aouar from Lyon – he’s a similar player, a quality midfielder, obviously he’s not the same player, but he’s a quality midfielder, he scores goals, he has great mentality, he’s a fantastic talent, so they are considering him, they are looking at him, they are scouting him.

“They are not the only club looking at Szoboszlai. AC Milan were so close to signing him and they are still interested, but there are also other clubs interested in Szoboszlai.

“We have to say, Arsenal are interested, are looking at Szoboszlai – but they are not in advanced talks to sign him.”

TIF Thoughts on what Romano had to say about Arsenal’s interest in Szoboszlai…

As Romano said, Arsenal aren’t the only club who are said to be interested in signing the £22.5m-rated player. Current Serie A leaders AC Milan have also been linked with the player, as have RB Leipzig, who currently sit in second place on the Bundesliga table

Both of those teams play in one of Europe’s top five leagues, like Arsenal, but both of them also sit far higher on their respective league tables than Arsenal do on theirs, so perhaps both of those teams represent a more attractive prospect than Arsenal do, at present.

Furthermore, there is an obvious link between Szoboszlai’s current club, Red Bull Salzburg, and RB Leipzig, in that they are both funded by Red Bull, so could that give the German club the edge with regard to securing the ‘highly-rated’ player’s signature?

Szoboszlai is said to have an ‘affordable release clause,’ so if Arsenal meet that, then perhaps they could convince the 20-year-old that the Emirates is the right place for him to further his development but it certainly seems like they will face some stiff competition to sign him.
