Dom Howson and James Marriott discussed all of the latest Sheffield Wednesday news on the most recent edition of the Singing The Blues podcast and the journalists spent some time talking about the reduction of the Owls’ points deduction from 12 points to six points during the show.

Sheffield Wednesday were handed a 12-point deduction for the 2020/21 Championship campaign by an independent disciplinary commission back in August after the Yorkshire club was found guilty of breaching the EFL’s profitability and sustainability regulations but on appeal, that points deduction has been halved.

To kick off our latest quiz on this past weekend's EFL action, which team earned a 3-0 victory over Championship leaders Reading at the weekend?

This news broke last Wednesday, a day before Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri held a press conference but during this recent edition of the Singing The Blues podcast, Howson explained that Chansiri wasn’t privy to knowledge that his club’s points deduction was going to be halved, sharing that the news “came as a big surprise to everybody.”

Here is what the journalist had to say in full: “It was most unexpected. It was interesting, actually – the club made it very clear that the press conference with the chairman – that wasn’t organised thinking that there was going to be some announcement to the points deduction reduction. It just turned out to be that way.

“I was only told a couple of days before, it was all confirmed that it was still ongoing and I think the club expected [the announcement] to be the back-end of November, so it came as a big surprise to everybody, the announcement, a big surprise.”

Do you think the Owls can push for promotion now that their points deduction has been reduced?

TIF Thoughts on what Howson had to say about the reduction of Wednesday’s points deduction…

If what Howson had to say is true, then it will surely have come as a pleasant surprise to all of those involved with the Owls that their points deduction was reduced last week.

The reduction of their points deduction, as well as the fact that they took four points from their last two league games, has taken Wednesday off the bottom of the table, as they are now level on points with Derby County but above them on the table due to their superior goal difference.

Following the surprise, perhaps now the club has time to plan ahead with their new set of circumstances. In his press conference last week, Chansiri discussed how difficult it was for the Owls to recruit players during the summer because of their points deduction and he also indicated that the Owls’ aim would have been to earn promotion to the Premier League had it not been for their points deduction, with the Wednesday owner asking “otherwise what’s the point in spending money?”

So, now that the points deduction has been reduced, it will be interesting to see if that has a significant impact on Wednesday’s goals for the season or on their transfer activity in January, both from the club’s point of view in terms of their willingness to spend and from the point of view of their transfer targets and their willingness to move to Hillsborough.
