Simon from The Wednesday Week podcast believes that Sheffield Wednesday could make an ‘out of the blue’ managerial appointment.

Simon was a guest on the latest episode of The Wednesday Week podcast and the panel talked about multiple issues involving Sheffield Wednesday. One topic of discussion was the club’s next manager, now that Garry Monk has left the club. Simon believes that the club could make an unexpected appointment like they did with Carlos Carvalhal back in 2015.

The Owls parted ways with Monk recently and he had been in charge of the club for just over a year. The club’s goalless draw with Millwall proved to be Monk’s last game in-charge at Hillsborough (as per the Guardian).

When talking about who the club’s next manager can be, Simon talked about the manner in which Carvalhal was appointed by the club.

He said: “You know what it reminds me of here, is when Stuart Gray was sacked, and within 24-48 hours, Carlos came in. And I remember, I think we were at Barnsley watching England Under-21s play and all of a sudden, everybody went – Stuart Gray has been sacked. It was completely out of the blue, wasn’t it?

“And then this unknown Portuguese manager appeared and the rest is obviously history in regards to his next three seasons. So, maybe there is somebody – I’m not saying Carlos is coming back, please don’t come back – but maybe there is somebody there in the wings. Because it is literally so out of the blue.”

TIF Thoughts on Simon’s comments regarding Sheffield Wednesday’s next manager…

While Carvalhal was appointed as the club’s manager in the summer of 2015, he stayed there until December 2017. He managed as many as 131 games at Sheffield Wednesday and his points per match tally stood at an impressive 1.56 (as per Transfermarkt).

Under Carvalhal, the Owls finished as high as sixth and fourth in consecutive seasons in the Championship. This suggests that he did have quite a good time at the club. While Sol Campbell and Phil Neville are said to be under consideration to become Wednesday’s next manager, fans can only hope that if an ‘out of the blue’ appointment does take place, he goes onto replicate what Carvalhal did at the club.
