Dom Howson and James Marriott discussed all of the latest Sheffield Wednesday news on the most recent edition of the Singing The Blues podcast and the journalists spent some time talking about potential replacements for Garry Monk during the show.

Monk was sacked by the Yorkshire club earlier this week, with Wednesday sitting in 23rd place in the Championship on six points. That points total is taking into account the six-point deduction that they have been dealt this season, however, even with an additional six points, the Owls would only be sitting one place above the relegation zone, so it’s clear that their start to the season has been poor and perhaps this sacking was justified.

To kick off our latest quiz on this past weekend's EFL action, which team earned a 3-0 victory over Championship leaders Reading at the weekend?

One name that has been linked with taking the reins at Hillsborough in the wake of Monk’s departure is ex-Wednesday captain Nigel Pearson and here is what Howson had to say about the possibility of the 57-year-old becoming the new Owls boss during this recent edition of the Singing The Blues podcast:

“One man we’ve not talked about who is certainly on the shortlist is Nigel Pearson, but I don’t think that, as a guy who lives in the city, that he wants to manage a club in the city.

“He doesn’t want it to affect his home life and let’s face it, inevitably, every manager, it gets to a point where you will be given the boot and then things will turn sour and so I can understand why, from his point of view, Nigel Pearson wouldn’t want that, necessarily.

“So I don’t think that Nigel Pearson is probably going to be a goer unless something dramatic happens.”

TIF Thoughts on what Howson had to say about the possibility of Pearson becoming the new Owls boss…

Given his history with Wednesday as well as the fact that he has been described as an ‘escape artist‘ as a manager, it may not come as a big surprise that it seems Wednesday are considering Pearson for the role, as Howson suggested.

Perhaps it would be understandable if Pearson doesn’t want to take the job if he lives in the city, as things going badly at Hillsborough may make him an unpopular man around Sheffield with fans of the club, while the city is also home to the Owls’ local rivals Sheffield United and perhaps doing well as Wednesday boss would make him unpopular with fans of that club. So, taking the Owls job may be a lose-lose for Pearson in some ways.

It seems as though there are plenty of signs that suggest Pearson won’t be the man to take the Hillsborough hot seat and perhaps other potential targets for the position are more likely to end up at Sheffield Wednesday.
