Sheffield Wednesday journalist Nancy Frostick has shared some insight into how the relationship between former Owls manager Garry Monk and club owner Dejphon Chansiri broke down before Monk was recently sacked

This comes after Frostick recently made an appearance on The Totally Football League Show where she spoke about a range of topics concerning the Championship club at the moment.

On the subject of Monk’s departure from the club, Frostick had this to say on a potential breakdown of his relationship with Chansiri over some of the players that recently left the club, Frostick had this to say on the issue.

She said: “I think this has been almost like a long-term problem. Obviously, Wednesday have really struggled in 2020. What I understand [is] the communication between the chairman and the manager has been frequent, according to both sides, so there were certain players, obviously, Wednesday lost quite a few big names in the summer, just at the end of their contracts, and from what I understand, the manager wanted to keep a few of them, but obviously, he kind of makes the decision on footballing grounds and then it’s up to the chairman whether Wednesday can find space to afford the players’ wages – and given Wednesday’s struggles with FFP and stuff, it’s not unreasonable.”

Monk was appointed as Wednesday manager back in September 2019, and the 41-year-old took charge of 58 matches with the Owls, winning 19, drawing 14 and losing 25 along the way (per Transfermarkt).

The previous summer transfer window saw a fair number of players leave the club on free transfers such as Steven Fletcher, Fernando Forestieri, Sam Hutchinson, Sam Winnall and Morgan Fox amongst others.

TIF Thoughts on Nancy Frostick’s comments…

Looking at how many players left the club on free transfers in the summer, it could be safe to assume that Monk might not have been happy that they were allowed to leave if he may have wanted some of they to stay and sign new deals at the club and could well have fallen out with Chansiri over it.

However, taking into account that Monk had only won three out of a possible 11 Championship matches this season before he was sacked, this could well have given Chansiri a reason to get Monk out of the club if they had fallen out.

In our view, this situation just proves how important it is for a manager to have a good relationship with a club’s owner.
