EFL pundit Ali Maxwell was a guest on the latest edition of the Ranks FC podcast and he shared some criticism for both Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County while talking about how Championship clubs conduct their transfer business during the show.

The Rams currently sit at the bottom of England’s second tier, while the Owls sit just one place higher than them on the league table at present.

During the 2019/20 campaign, both Derby and Wednesday were charged with breaching the EFL’s spending rules and while the charges against Derby were dismissed in August, the charges against Sheffield Wednesday resulted in the club being handed a six-point deduction – reduced from 12 points – for the 2020/21 campaign.

An easy one to kick off our quiz on this past week in the EFL, who was appointed as Sheffield Wednesday's new manager last Friday?

On this recent edition of the Ranks FC podcast, Maxwell issued a claim on the potential impact that the Owls’ and the Rams’ respective business in the transfer market may have had on their issues with the EFL’s spending rules, saying:

“I basically have a bit of an issue. I can understand why, as fans, it’s really tough to sell your players, but as a Championship club, I think you should almost celebrate a big sale.

“That is a sign that your team is doing the right thing; that’s the sign that your team is probably going to progress and grow and reach the next level in footballing terms if you look at the long term.

“I think of teams like Sheffield Wednesday and Derby who spend a lot of money and barely ever sell anyone for any significant money, and guess what? After three years, FFP catches up, you’ve got to basically try and sell everyone just to pass the FFP rules and you don’t have any money to buy players.”

TIF Thoughts on what Maxwell had to say about “teams like Sheffield Wednesday and Derby”…

Using Sheffield Wednesday as an example, the season after Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri completed his takeover of the club in January 2015 – the 2015/16 campaign – the club made a net loss of £12.69m in the transfer market. The following season, they spent £9.81m on incoming transfers and received no money from player sales and the season after that, they spent £13.68m on incoming transfers and, once again, received nothing from player sales

Despite Chansiri investing heavily in the playing squad in his first few seasons as Wednesday’s owner, the Owls have failed to earn promotion to the Premier League since he took over and they remain in England’s second-tier. While the club did make a net transfer profit in both of the two seasons preceding the current one, they have still made an overall net loss in the transfer market during this period under Chansiri’s ownership.

The Owls breached the EFL’s spending rules by including the sale of Hillsborough to Chansiri in the accounts for the wrong season but according to the BBC, the Owls owner only bought the stadium in the first place to make sure that they made a profit so perhaps their issues could have been avoided if their transfer business was more sustainable, as Maxwell suggested.
