Derby County journalist Ryan Conway has provided an update on the reported takeover of the Championship club.

This comes after Conway recently made an appearance on The Athletic’s Ornstein & Chapman Podcast, where he spoke about all the latest goings-on at Pride Park.

An easy one to kick off our quiz on this past week in the EFL, who was appointed as Sheffield Wednesday's new manager last Friday?

During the episode, Conway was asked if there had been any update over the reported takeover of the club from the Abu Dhabi Royal Family’s Sheikh Khaled, cousin of Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour.

In response, Conway had this to say on the matter.

He said: “My understanding is it’s close; could be wrapped up this week. The [understanding] is that Mel Morris is going to stay on in a consultancy role. He’s going to take a bit of a step back but assist with a lot of things. I think it’s pretty close and I think the departure of [Phillip] Cocu is another signal that it’s pretty close to happening now.”

Earlier this month, it was reported that the EFL had approved the takeover of the club. Then, when the club parted company with their manager Phillip Cocu last weekend, it was reported that this had no impact on the proposed £60 million takeover.

TIF Thoughts on Ryan Conway’s takeover update…

Despite the news on the proposed takeover, on the pitch, Derby are in quite a sticky situation at the moment, sitting at the bottom of the Championship table after winning just one of their 11 league games so far this season.

In our view, if the takeover does go through, the club’s main objective should be trying to get out of the relegation zone and securing their safety in the Championship.

With the January transfer window on the horizon, maybe the new owners could help the club look to bring in some new players to strengthen their squad and boost their chances of survival.

Although they may need to hit the ground running in that regard in order for Derby to turn their season around, it does seem at the very least that the future for the Rams will be considerably brighter than the state of their current predicament.
