During a recent YouTube video, Ryan Conway, who reports on Derby County for The Athletic, spent some time talking about the role that current Rams owner Mel Morris could have at Pride Park following Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan’s impending takeover of the East Midlands club.

According to Sky Sports, this takeover is expected to be completed by the end of this month and Phillip Cocu’s successor – after the 50-year-old was sacked this past weekend – isn’t expected to be appointed until the takeover is completed

An easy one to kick off our quiz on this past week in the EFL, who was appointed as Sheffield Wednesday's new manager last Friday?

However, it was claimed that Morris, as well as the rest of the Rams’ current board, was set to participate in talks with the club’s prospective new owners about the appointment of Derby’s next manager this past Sunday and during this YouTube video, Conway shed some light on the role he anticipates Morris will have at Pride Park following this takeover and, in particular, the role he will play in the selection of the Rams’ next manager.

The journalist said: “I would imagine he will have some say in it but ultimately, the new owners – it will be their decision. I believe Mel wants to stay on in a consulting role, so therefore, he will consult on the new manager, but ultimately, it will be their guy.”

Would you like Morris to be a consultant for Derby following the takeover?

TIF Thoughts on what Conway had to say about Morris’ potential involvement with the appointment of Derby’s next manager…

Considering that Morris has been Derby County’s sole owner since September 2015, it may be understandable why the club’s new ownership would want to keep him around as a consultant so that they can benefit from the experience that he has built up over the last five years.

However, Derby have had plenty of managers during those five years, and despite Morris pumping ‘many millions’ into the club in pursuit of promotion to the Premier League, they have failed to achieve that goal, failing to finish as high as they did in the 2015/16 season (fifth) in any of the campaigns that followed, with the Rams achieving their lowest finish in England’s second tier (10th) under Morris’ sole ownership last term.

So, it may be fair to say that Morris hasn’t exactly been hitting home runs with his managerial appointments at Derby and maybe you could argue that consulting him about the club’s next manager isn’t the best road for the club’s new ownership to go down.
