Jonathan Oakes, Andy Hinchcliffe and Daniel Mann discussed all of the latest EFL news on the most recent edition of the Sky Sports EFL Podcast and they spent some time speculating about Derby County manager Phillip Cocu’s future during the show.

Derby County have endured a difficult start to the 2020/21 Championship campaign, as they have won just one of their 11 games so far this term, losing seven of them. This leaves them sitting at the bottom of England’s second-tier at present.

To kick off our latest quiz on this past weekend's EFL action, which team earned a 3-0 victory over Championship leaders Reading at the weekend?

This poor start to the campaign has led to speculation over Rams boss Cocu’s future but it has been claimed that current Derby owner Mel Morris ‘is reluctant to sack’ the Dutch coach because of how much money it would cost him as he ‘is very close to selling the club,’ with it having been reported that Sheikh Khaled’s takeover bid has received the EFL’s approval.

While discussing the takeover during this recent edition of the Sky Sports EFL Podcast, Hinchcliffe indicated that he thinks Cocu’s days at Pride Park are numbered, should the club’s ownership change hands, saying:

“I’d be amazed if he survives this. Again, new owners like to change things, the first thing they tend to do is change their head coach. They’ve had a horrendous start to the season in terms of results, but also the major problem is their performances.

“They’re not getting results because they’re simply not playing well and that is the major worry. With new owners coming in, that tends to be the way, is that they bring somebody else in.”

TIF Thoughts on what Hinchcliffe had to say about Cocu’s future…

We feel it’s fair to say that Derby’s start to the 2020/21 Championship campaign has been “horrendous,” as Hinchcliffe stated, especially as some fans of the club had been hoping to see their side push for promotion to the Premier League this term.

With that in mind, perhaps it is understandable why pressure has been mounting on Cocu of late and perhaps it is time for a change in manager at the club.

It may be understandable if Morris is reluctant to sack the Dutchman, given that he does appear to be on the verge of selling the club but if the proposed takeover goes through, surely Hinchcliffe is right in suggesting that the new owner will look to make that change before too long to try and help their new club to avoid dropping into the third tier, which is where it looks like they may be heading under Cocu.
