Derby County centre-back Curtis Davies appeared on the latest edition of The Official EFL Podcast and during the show, he revealed how he learned of now-ex-Rams boss Phillip Cocu’s departure from the East Midlands club last weekend

Cocu was sacked with the Rams sitting at the bottom of the Championship table, having taken just six points from their first 11 games of the 2020/21 campaign.

An easy one to kick off our quiz on this past week in the EFL, who was appointed as Sheffield Wednesday's new manager last Friday?

The Dutchman’s sacking came off the back of seven league games in a row without a win, with Derby losing four of those last seven Championship games of Cocu’s tenure as manager, so perhaps the club’s players and fans wouldn’t have been too shocked to learn that the 50-year-old was dismissed.

However, it would seem as though Davies may have been surprised to find out about Cocu’s departure in the way that he did, judging by what he revealed on this podcast.

When asked how he learned that Cocu had left the club, Davies said: “Honest answer? I found out on social media. I literally was scrolling through Instagram, saw the gaffer’s face and saw that he’d been sacked – or, shall I say, left by mutual consent. So, yeah, that was quite interesting to find out that way, but it is what it is.”

TIF Thoughts on Davies’ revelation…

Davies is one of the most experienced players within the current Rams squad. Only one Derby player is older than the £270k-rated man and only two Derby players have participated in more Championship seasons than the 35-year-old centre-back.

Additionally, Davies captained Derby in three of their first 11 second-tier games this term, so it would certainly seem as though the Englishman is a senior figure in the Rams’ dressing room and so, as a result, perhaps you could argue that he should have been informed of this important news concerning the team in a more direct fashion rather than finding out via social media at the same time that the news is being broadcast to everybody.

Given that he said it “was quite interesting to find out that way,” it would seem as though this was an unusual way for him to find out this kind of news and that may also suggest that he would’ve expected the club to communicate this update differently to how they did.
