Celtic legend Chris Sutton has recently slammed Leigh Griffiths for his approach this season.

Sutton was a guest on the latest episode of the Record Celtic podcast and the panel discussed multiple issues involving the Bhoys. Their main topic of discussion was the recent Old Firm derby, which Celtic lost 2-0. Sutton focused on Griffiths and he believes that the striker should have a long, hard look at himself for how he’s approached things this season.

Griffiths has made just two appearances in all competitions for the Bhoys this season. He turned up for the club’s pre-season training in an overweight condition and stayed in Glasgow when the squad flew to France for their pre-season friendlies. He was later reminded of his responsibilities as photos had emerged of him hosting a party. He was injured for the first few weeks of the season.

Sutton had stinging criticism for Griffiths and he made his opinion very clear about the Scottish striker.

He said: “One player who I have to say, one thing which doesn’t sit right with me and I know he came back and it is good to see him back, is Leigh Griffiths. Leigh Griffiths has killed Neil Lennon in many respects. We’ve spoken about this before because that period when the season shut down where Leigh Griffiths just simply let himself go and he got out of shape and then he was left out of the mini pre-season, a fit Leigh Griffiths would give Celtic a much better option when Odsonne Edouard is out.

“And the fact that he can only play a few minutes of games isn’t good enough. So he’s a player really who needs to have a good, long hard look at himself and think, had he actually looked after himself better, Celtic could be in a far better place.”

TIF Thoughts…

Griffiths, who is currently valued at £1.80m, did score against St. Johnstone in his first appearance of the season. He suffered from injury issues last season as well but he became a crucial part of the team in the second half of the 2019/20 campaign. He scored seven goals during that time and picked up three assists.

That is proof of the fact that, when fit, Griffiths can be an important player for the Bhoys and he might have contributed something to the club’s first-team if he was fit earlier in the season. So it is understandable why Sutton believes that Griffiths’ situation has caused a lot of trouble for Neil Lennon in the current campaign.
