Jonny McFarlane and Scott McDermott discussed all things Rangers on the most recent edition of the Record Rangers podcast and they spent some time talking about Gers winger Jordan Jones during the show.

After joining the club in the summer of 2019, Jones made just seven league appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side in the 2019/20 season and prior to last weekend’s Premiership clash with Motherwell, the £540k-rated Northern Ireland international hadn’t featured in any of Rangers’ first eight games of the 2020/21 league campaign.

How well do you remember Rangers' 2020/21 season so far? We'll start you off with an easy one... Rangers beat Aberdeen 1-0 in the opening gameweek of the Premiership, but which player scored the only goal of the game?

However, as per WhoScored, he started and played 76 minutes against Motherwell last weekend, scoring one of the Gers’ goals in that 5-1 win and earning the fifth-highest overall WhoScored rating (7.64) of any Rangers player in that game.

Following that impressive performance last weekend, the Sunday Mail’s chief football writer, McDermott, was full of praise for Jones on the latest edition of the Record Rangers podcast, saying: “I’m surprised at how Jordan Jones has managed to fight his way back into the manager’s plans.

“Everything pointed towards Jordan Jones leaving Rangers, he’s been so far out of the picture.

“Gerrard has never really spoke of him in glowing terms so you felt as if his time there was going to be up so, listen, I think the player deserves credit for hanging in there, he’s obviously done well in training over pre-season.

“I know he certainly did well in the game I was at over in Lyon in the friendly tournament when he came off the bench and made an impact. So, I think he deserves credit for getting his way back in.

“It’s just given Gerrard another option, I think, against teams with a back three in that channel between wing-back and centre-back, I think he can be a real weapon for Rangers. He’s probably the only guy they’ve got who gives them that.”

TIF Thoughts…

So, as can be seen in what McDermott had to say about Jones during this recent podcast appearance, in addition to believing that the player “deserves credit” for seemingly getting himself back into the first-team picture at Ibrox, despite not playing a lot last season or at the start of this season, the journalist also seems to think that Jones could prove to be a valuable asset for Gerrard, should he remain part of the first-team picture moving forward following last weekend’s performance.

As per Transfermarkt, Jones is a versatile player, having played in as many as eight different positions throughout his career, so with that in mind, we also feel that the 25-year-old could be “a real weapon” for the Gers because he could seemingly provide cover for a variety of different areas if required.
