Ex-Rangers players Ian Durrant and Derek Ferguson joined host Ricki Neill on the most recent edition of the Blues Brothers Podcast to discuss all of the latest news concerning Rangers and during the show, they spent some time talking about 20-year-old Gers left-back, Calvin Bassey.

Bassey is a Leicester City academy product who joined the Glasgow-based club on a free transfer during the summer. Thus far, in his first season at Ibrox, the Englishman has made seven appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side in all competitions, five of which have come in the Premiership.

How well do you remember Rangers' 2020/21 season so far? We'll start you off with an easy one... Rangers beat Aberdeen 1-0 in the opening gameweek of the Premiership, but which player scored the only goal of the game?

Bassey played the full 90 minutes for the Gers on Sunday, helping his side to earn a 2-0 Premiership win over Livingston and during this recent edition of the Blues Brothers Podcast, Durrant was full of praise for his performance in this game and he shared some excitement over the £135k-rated player’s future at Ibrox.

He said: “I was really impressed with Bassey [on Sunday]. I thought he gave us a presence up and down the left and he looks as though he’s going to be a right good player in the years to come.

“[Borna] Barisic has just [gone] to another level in the way he’s performing – he must have seen a little bit of competition here.

“The young boy’s come in and you need to remember, he’s only [20] and he’s never let the team down. What a unit. He looks as though he could be anything he wants to be.”

TIF Thoughts on what Durrant had to say about Bassey…

So, it’s clear from what Durrant had to say during this recent edition of the Blues Brothers Podcast that he has been impressed by Bassey, with the ex-Scotland international sharing that he thinks the 20-year-old has motivated fellow Rangers left-back Barisic to step his game up due to the quality of competition that he is now providing, while he also seems to think that the left-back has got a bright future based on his performances for the club so far.

Gers boss Steven Gerrard seemingly shares a similar view on the left-back, as he recently stated that he views Bassey as a “rough diamond” that he and his coaching staff “need to polish.”

So, it will be interesting to see how the 20-year-old develops as this season progresses and if he starts to show signs of becoming the quality of player that both Durrant and Gerrard seem to think he has the potential to be.
