Pundit Peter Martin has recently made a claim about the situation of Celtic defender Shane Duffy.

Martin was hosting the latest episode of PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show and the panel discussed multiple issues involving Scottish football. One topic of discussion was Celtic and their recent performances. Martin gave his opinion about Duffy and he believes that the 28-year-old’s confidence looks shot.

Do you think Neil Lennon should drop Shane Duffy?

Duffy had joined Celtic on loan from Brighton in the summer transfer window. The likes of Burnley, West Brom and West Ham were also linked with a move for the Irish central defender. Duffy started his Celtic career well as he scored a goal each in his first two Premiership games for the Bhoys. He is currently valued at £8.55m.

Martin talked about the defender and he believes that if Neil Lennon had a choice, he would drop the 28-year-old from the club’s first-team.

He said: “I think if he had an option, I think he would drop Shane Duffy because his confidence is shot at the moment. I look at the player and I think there are mistakes waiting to happen with regards to Shane Duffy.”

TIF Thoughts on Peter Martin’s comments about Celtic’s Shane Duffy…

Duffy is a boyhood Celtic fan but he’s not picked up overly impressive ratings in the last three games in all competitions. He was the worst-performing Celtic player in their recent Premiership game against Aberdeen and he even came up with an error that led to a goal (as per WhoScored).

This suggests that Martin’s criticism is perhaps justified but Lennon has already called criticism of the defender ‘ridiculous’ and he has expressed his unhappiness at the treatment that the defender is getting from some parts of the media. This might mean that Lennon is still backing Duffy to succeed and he might not drop the Irishman anytime soon.
