The Athletic’s West Ham United correspondent Roshane Thomas has recently discussed which positions the club could strengthen in before the domestic transfer deadline.

Until 5pm on Friday, the Hammers are allowed to trade with clubs in the EFL in a domestic transfer window (per Sky Sports).

So far in the domestic window, the Irons have sealed the arrival of Craig Dawson from Championship side Watford on a season-long loan which could become a permanent move.

Brentford attacker Said Benrahma and Bournemouth forward Joshua King have also been linked with a move to the London Stadium before Friday.

In the latest episode of The Athletic’s U Irons podcast, Thomas discussed the domestic transfer window and aired two other positions which the club could recruit in.

Who did West Ham United face in their opening fixture of the 2020/21 Premier League season?

He said: “It could be both [a central midfielder and a left wing-back] because we’re really light in central midfield, especially with the departure of Jack Wilshere.

“If, let’s say, [Tomas] Soucek or Declan Rice were to suffer an injury, it would just totally change the way we play. They both make driving runs from midfield, both have a lot of energy.

“You’re looking at Mark Noble – [a] good player for West Ham, but doesn’t have the legs. You’re looking at Conor Coventry – a good player, but we’re asking a lot if we’re asking him to be the equivalent of Declan Rice or Tomas Soucek already.

“So, I feel like that’s an area West Ham could look at and say, ‘Hey, we need to bring an extra body in,’ and obviously left wing-back because [Arthur] Masuaku withdrew from the squad due to an injury.

“You look at it thinking, obviously [Aaron] Cresswell could be the direct replacement, but it’s good to have another option there as well. So, they’re the two positions I believe West Ham should look at before the deadline.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what the journalist had to say, he seems to believe that central midfield and left wing-back are two positions the Hammers should look to recruit in before 5pm on Friday.

Which of the two positions do West Ham need to recruit in more?

With little time left before the deadline of the domestic transfer window, it will be interesting to see if Moyes does opt to make a move for a player in either position.
