Ryan Dilks and Justin Peach discussed all of the latest incoming and outgoing transfers concerning Championship clubs during the most recent edition of the Second Tier podcast and they spent some time talking about Welsh centre-back Joe Rodon’s move from Swansea City to Tottenham Hotspur during the show.

Spurs had been linked with a move for Rodon throughout the recent domestic-only transfer window which began after the Premier League’s international transfer window closed on 5th October and remained open until last Friday, which is the same day that this Rodon transfer ultimately ended up getting over the line.

How well can you remember the last few weeks of Spurs action? 1. Which played scored a hattrick against Maccabi Haifa?

Reports had claimed that the two clubs were ‘some way apart’ in their respective valuations of the player, with Tottenham said to have initially valued the 22-year-old at around £7m and the Swans said to have originally placed an £18m price tag on Rodon.

If these alleged original valuations are to be believed, then it may be fair to say that Spurs got the better end of this deal by signing the player for ‘an initial £11m plus add-ons’, with this initial fee being closer to their original valuation than Swansea’s and while discussing this transfer during this recent edition of the Second Tier podcast, Peach shared that he thinks the Championship club “might feel a bit short-changed” by this deal.

He said: “You sort of have to feel a little bit that Swansea have weakened themselves and [are] not getting, perhaps, a fee big enough to justify the player’s age, potential and the club that he’s gone to, in Spurs.

“Obviously, they’re a bit tight, Spurs are, so they’re not going to want to pay a massive fee but you consider other players like Ezri Konsa who hasn’t had as much experience as Joe Rodon in the Championship went for, I think, a similar fee about £12m, maybe more, so maybe Swansea might feel a bit short-changed but they’re a club that, sometimes, it feels like they’re desperate for money.

“It shouldn’t be but it feels like they are and I think getting Rodon out the door gives them a fee and gives him a chance to play in the Premier League.”

TIF Thoughts on Peach’s comments about Rodon’s transfer fee…

The Wales international is currently only valued at £6.3m according to Transfermarkt, which would make it seem as though Spurs paid plenty of money for him, although, considering that Swansea were said to be initially valuing the centre-back much higher than what they sold him for, it may be understandable why Peach feels this wasn’t a good deal for Swansea City – and a great one for Spurs and Daniel Levy, who certainly has a reputation for being a tough negotiator.

However, as stated by the BBC there are also add-ons in this deal but the report doesn’t state exactly what this fee could rise to. So, perhaps Tottenham could end up paying a transfer fee much closer to the Swans’ reported initial valuation, in which case maybe the Championship club won’t end up being as “short-changed” as Peach thinks they have been.

Furthermore, while Peach thinks the player’s potential means that Spurs should have had to pay a higher transfer fee for him, there is no guarantee that he will end up being as good as Spurs or Swansea anticipate, in which case this may not end up looking like such a great piece of business from the Lilywhites at all, so perhaps we will just have to wait and see how Rodon develops in order to properly judge this deal.
