Speaking on a recent episode of the Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano claimed there is ‘nothing’ between Tottenham Hotspur and Inter regarding the return of Christian Eriksen.

Since moving to Inter from Spurs in what was a £24.3 million deal in January, Eriksen has so far gone on to make 32 appearances for I Nerazzurri, scoring four goals and providing three assists along the way.

However, following his mid-season move, the £45 million-rated 28-year-old somewhat struggled to hold down a starting position in Antonio Conte’s side, making more appearances from the bench (nine) than he did starts (eight) last season in Serie A.

It has been a similar story for the Denmark international this season, making two league starts in addition to two substitute appearances in Serie A, over which he has averaged a disappointing WhoScored match rating of 6.32/10 – ranking him as the club’s fourth-worst performer in the league.

Eriksen himself has spoken out about this lack of game time, stating that doesn’t want to ‘sit on the bench for the whole season’ and that he hoped ‘this isn’t the coach’s or the club’s intention’ for the rest of the season.

However, it appears that – should Inter have wanted – they could have offloaded the attacking midfielder in the summer, as Romano claimed Spurs enquired about the possibility of bringing the 28-year-old back to north London, but the Serie A side reportedly rejected this offer out of hand.

This is something that Romano touched on in the latest episode of the Here We Go podcast, in which he provided an update on the links between Eriksen and his former club.

He said: “Tottenham, during last July, had the opportunity to sign Christian Eriksen. They had [talks] with Inter about the situation – they were talking about [Milan] Skriniar, about [Tanguy] Ndombele, about different [situations].

“But, immediately after the first contact, Inter said, ‘we are not going [to] loan Christian out and [we are] not selling him this summer.’ So, that’s why, immediately, the deal collapsed and there is nothing, at the moment, for Eriksen to Tottenham.

“Obviously, he is not having a good moment with Inter and we will see what will happen [in] January. But the only club who were trying to sign Eriksen this summer, on loan, was Borussia Dortmund. They were really interested in Eriksen, but just on loan, and Inter immediately [said], ‘no loan for Christian Eriksen.'”

TIF Thoughts on Fabrizio Romano’s comments regarding Christian Eriksen…

From Romano’s comments, it is clear that the journalist is of the belief that while Spurs did indeed ask about the possibility of re-signing Eriksen this summer, there was never really a chance of this deal happening, as Inter did not want to let the midfielder go.

Romano also states that, as far as he is aware, there is nothing currently going on behind the scenes regarding a deal to bring Eriksen back to Spurs, which is likely to be disappointing news for the Tottenham fans who were keen on the idea of the 28-year-old making a return to their club.
