Former Tottenham Hotspur player Ramon Vega has been discussing the interest in him from a number of other English clubs prior to his switch from Italy, which included Liverpool and Leeds United.

Vega appeared on the Open Goal YouTube channel alongside Si Ferry for an interview in which he discussed a variety of topics and the former Switzerland international revealed both Liverpool and Leeds United were also interested in bringing him to the Premier League when he signed for the North London club.

How well can you remember the last few weeks of Spurs action? 1. Which played scored a hattrick against Maccabi Haifa?

During his career, the centre-back represented a number of clubs including Grasshoppers, Cagliari, Spurs, Celtic and Watford. In the interview, the defender recalled the time he swapped Serie A for the Premier League and here is what the now 49-year-old had to say:

“Spurs were calling during the time, Liverpool and Leeds, these are the three clubs who wanted [me at the] time and I chose at the time for Spurs.

“Spurs wanted to sign me already in the summer, because in Euro ’96 what happened [was] there were suddenly lots of teams who [were] interested [in] me. During these 6/7 months [after the European Championships], Spurs were still knocking on the door all the time, saying ‘why are you not coming to England?’, they started pursuing me, there was Liverpool and Leeds as well at the time and I decided to go to Spurs because I think this was the one that really, from the beginning, wanted me.”

TIF Thoughts…

Vega tasted League Cup glory with Tottenham Hotspur in 1999 (as per Transfermarkt) when under George Graham, they defeated Leicester City 1-0 in the showpiece final at Wembley thanks to a late goal from Allan Nielsen.

Do you regard Ramon Vega as a Spurs hero?

The Lilywhites have won just one major trophy since then in the shape of the 2008 League Cup, and so given silverware has been hard to come by for Spurs, it could be argued that Vega holds a place in the club’s history.

With Jose Mourinho now at the helm and off the back of what we believe to have been a strong transfer window which included the re-signing of Gareth Bale, we can assume that the fans may be a little more confident of returning back to winning ways and bringing some silverware back to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium sooner rather than later.
