Speaking recently on the Football Writers Podcast, Anne-Marie Batson discussed Tottenham Hotspur’s congested fixture list and Jose Mourinho’s concerns regarding Harry Kane.

Following an interrupted season in 2019/20 campaign, in which Spurs played their last Premier League fixture of the season on 26th July, the club lined up for their first league game of the new season against Everton just 49 days later, on 13th September.

Since that Everton fixture, Mourinho’s side has already played a further six matches, with the club’s fixture schedule looking likely to remain packed over the weeks and months ahead.

The Spurs manager has openly criticised the number of games his side already have and still will have to play in such a short space of time, suggesting that their congested fixture list could result in his players picking up injuries.

This was a subject of conversation on a recent episode of the Football Writers Podcast, with Baston stating that she feels sympathy for Mourinho and Tottenham because of their large number of fixtures.

She said: “The big issue that Spurs [have] right now – I do have some sympathy for them – is their [congested] calendar, it’s horrendous the number of games that they’ve got coming up.

“Mourinho has said publicly that he’s worried about Harry Kane, particularly with these England internationals that are coming up, and also their own games as well.

“So, I think there isn’t actually a lot for Mourinho to be cheerful about right now – he’s got some genuine concerns.”

TIF Thoughts…

From Baston’s comments, it is clear that the journalist holds a similar opinion to Mourinho, in that the sheer volume of games Tottenham have already played and are still set to play is “horrendous”, as well as highlighting the manager’s concern for Kane, who, as the club’s only out-and-out striker in the squad at present, has featured in every fixture the club has played so far this season.

However, with it being reported that Spurs have agreed a deal to sign centre-forward Carlos Vinicius on a season-long loan from Benfica on Friday, it would appear that the burden Kane has been bearing over the start of the season could become a little less heavy going forward.
