Football journalist David Ornstein has been discussing the possibility of Southampton offering Saints striker Danny Ings a new contract at the club.

This comes after Ornstein recently co-hosted the latest episode of The Athletic’s Ornstein & Chapman Podcast where he spoke about the biggest talking points surrounding a range of different Premier League clubs.

How well do you remember the action from the opening weekend of the Premier League? - 1. Who scored the first goal of the season?

On the topic of Ings and the possibility of him staying at Southampton for the foreseeable future, Ornstein had this to say on the matter.

He said: “I think that makes sense [staying at Southampton] because Danny Ings has only been there [for] a year permanently, two years with the loan from Liverpool. [He’s] very settled, we know he’s from that part of the world anyway, [he’s] scoring goals for fun. One of the in-form strikers in Europe over the last year or so. He’s broken into the England squad, scored a spectacular goal recently under Gareth Southgate, he’s flying again at the start of this season.

“He’s fit, which was the biggest problem during his career, especially at Liverpool and so a new deal to reward that and increase his pay, extend the terms of his deal seems like a sensible move for all parties.

“It’s not done yet, they’re close to an agreement. Southampton are relaxed about the situation because they know of his desire and they think they’ve offered him a good deal. We don’t know about the exact length of it yet, I think that still needs to be ironed out and also crucially, the potential inclusion of a release clause.

“Those are the final details that need to be sorted out before he puts pen to paper.”

As Ornstein mentioned in the podcast, Southampton signed the striker on loan from Liverpool back in the 2018 summer transfer window.

Then in the 2019 summer transfer window, Southampton signed Ings on a permanent deal from the Merseyside club for a fee of £19.98 million.

Overall, the 28-year-old has made 73 appearances for Southampton in which he has managed to score 37 goals and provide six assists.

Ings was in hot goalscoring form last season after he racked up a total of 22 goals in 38 league appearances, ultimately earning himself a season rating of 7.12/10 (per WhoScored).

Given Ings’ impressive prowess in front of goal last season, it’s no wonder the club are trying to work out a new deal for him and keep him at Southampton for the foreseeable future.
